Prinz Salm is the oldest family-owned estate in Germany, tracing its history back to 1200. The wines are from the northern area of Nahe and Rheinhessen, where a political boundary is more important than any differences in terroir.
The wines have been good for a long time, but my experience with the previous generation is that they were a bit understated and took time to show their stuff. Some years back, Felix Salm took over the family vineyards and the wines are now easier to appreciate young.
2022 Sommerlocher Steinrössel Riesling trocken
This is a gorgeous wine that has everything coming together now. White nectarine fruit is in the nose and mouth and the wine is dense, deep, and intense with very good precision. Cork closure. 12.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 18 23. 91+/A-
2022 Dalberger Ritterhölle Riesling trocken
Lime blossom and slightly herbal notes in the nose. Medium-weight mouth, rounder and less grip than the Steinrössel above, good stoniness. Cork closure. 12.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 17 23. 88/B
2022 (Wallhausen) Johannisberg Riesling GG

2022 (Bingen) Scharlachberg Riesling GG
Spicy nose. Medium-weight, some chewiness to texture, some power here, dark plum fruit. Perhaps a touch rustic. Cork closure. 13.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 13 23. 90/B+
2022 (Bingen) Kirchberg Riesling GG

2023 Riesling Two Princes
This wine has some citric and tropical fruit, but the sugar/acid balance is tilted too far for the sweetness, robbing the wine of energy and tightness. Screw cap closure. 11.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 06 24eeeres. 85/C
2023 (Wallhäuser) Felseneck Riesling Kabinett
The 2023 Felseneck Kabinett is an elegant wine with white peach skin aromas and white peach fruit in the medium-light body. The wine feels light on the palate and the fruit in the mouth persists for a long time. The wine is only off-dry and although the total acidity doesn’t seem to be high, the malic acidity gives sufficient structure to the wine. Screw cap closure. 9.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 08 24. 90/A
2023 (Wallhäuser) Felseneck Riesling Spätlese
As with the Kabinett, the 2023 Felseneck Spätlese has white peach skin aromas and white peach flavors. The body is medium-weight and the sugar/acid balance allows freshness and some sweetness. It’s a wine I would probably drink over the next 4-6 years. Cork closure. 8.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 04 24. 92/A
