Nessia is located in the northeast sector of the 3rd arrondissement.
The restaurant dates to late 2022 and is a combined project of Thomas Cherbit (chef) and Maximilien Duipart, who met when both were enrolled at the prestigious École Ferrandi, a cooking school on the left bank. At the time that Nessia opened, Cherbit and Duipart also owned Pipalottes in the 9th arrondissement, but that restaurant is now gone.
The meal was very good, but as I’ll discuss below, there were elements that warrant a second visit to understand better what is happening here.
The interior is attractive, modern, and comfortable with plenty of spacing:
On a Tuesday January lunch, the diners were all French, except for us, and seemed to be a mixture of people who had dined there before and others who walked in off the street.
The carte:
We wanted to share the lamb shoulder, but were told that it had been so popular the previous Saturday night (the restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday) that it was now sold out.
We adjusted accordingly.
L took the crisp raviolis of black tiger shrimp, dark mushrooms, ginger, and mint, and they were excellent — crisp, fresh, and precise:
I took the foie gras (sorry for the lack of focus):
On the left is a crispy cracker with Indian spices and the foie gras itself was of good quality.
Wine was somewhat of a problem. The wine list on line is excellent and at good prices. When we looked at the wine list in the restaurant, a large number of wines were listed as sold out, and those that remained were at higher prices than shown on the restaurant’s website. We took a 2022 red Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Nuits from Guyon — if everything listed on the website had been available this would have been my 12th or maybe 15th choice, but c’est la vie. The wine was not bad, but also not really interesting.
With the lamb no longer available, L took the filet de bar (sea bass) which she pronounced really excellent:
I took the bavette:
I’m not normally a big fan of French beef, but this was very flavorful and the frites were excellent, too.
We didn’t have room for dessert, but they sounded attractive.
Nessia provides excellent food at reasonable prices in a part of the Haut Marais that has needed a restaurant of this quality. However, the experience of the wine list causes me to wonder about possible cash flow problems here. It’s a place to keep an eye on and to revisit in spring.
