Maison MARCHAND-TAWSE and Domaine TAWSE Part I -- 2022 Red Wines from the Côte de Beaune Tasted from Barrel
This operation in the heart of Nuits-Saint-Georges, a partnership between (a) Pasacal Marchand, formerly of Domaine des Epeneaux/Comte Armand and Domaine de la Vougeraie, and (b) Morey Tawse continues to make attractive wines that are a little below the radar in today’s Burgundy. Notably, the style here is now less powerful and extracted than were the wines under Pascal’s tenure at both Epeneaux and Vougeraie. These wines certainly are worthy of exploration by Burgundy fans who have found that current conditions have cut them off from other producers they once were able to obtain.
As almost everywhere in the Côte d’Or, the malolactic fermentations were quick in 2022.
The wines below are estate wines except for the Bourgogne Côte d’Or.
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’ Or
This wine is from vines located in Prémeaux, Ladoix, and Puligny, and made with about 10-20% of the stems included. It has purple fruit and is medium-weight, smooth, elegant, and long for what it is. A very nice Bourgogne. (87-89)
2022 Beaune 1er Cru Le Clos du Roi
The nose here is delicate with red fruits. The mouth is medium-light with red cherry flavors and overall the wine is elegant and energetic. The vines are on the hillside. About 20% whole clusters. (90-92)
2022 Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons
From the bottom of Teurons, next to Grèves, this wine has dark cherry and plum fruit that is not overripe. There are nice balance, finesse, and layering to add to the attractiveness. (91-94)
2022 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets
The Frémiets is a medium-weight wine with purity, Fremiets firmness and hardness of texture, finesse, and a slight dustiness which is attractive. 25% whole clusters here, about 35% new oak. (91-94)
