Maison MARCHAND-TAWSE and Domaine TAWSE (Nuits-Saint-Georges)-- 2023 Tasted from Barrel, Tank, and Bottle Part 1: Red Regional and Village Wines
Pascal Marchand said that harvesting began on 9 September and lasted three weeks. He used less whole clusters in 2023 than usual because of space limitations due to the large harvest. For the red wines, the alcohols are mostly around 13%.
The négociant wines, generally made from purchased fruit, are under the Marchand-Tawse label, the estate wines are under the Domaine Tawse label.
2023 Bourgogne Côte d’Or rouge
Red currants and strawberries in the nose; very open. The mouth is a bit darker in its fruit, but still with strawberries present. Very good. (89-91)
2023 Pommard Les Saussilles
The vines here are above the premier cru portion of Saussilles; 2/3 of the vines are about 90 years-old. Red fruits in the mouth, finesse, smooth texture, light on the palate, purity, fine tannins. (89-92)
2023 Bourgogne - Coteaux Bourguignons
Tasted from bottle. Pascal said that he has been making changes to this bottling since 2016, when it was entirely made from Gamay. It is now 70% Pinot Noir from Vosne-Romanée and Morey-Saint-Denis. The wine has red fruits and a bit more weight than the Bourgogne Côte d’Or above and it features a glossy texture. 87/A-
2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges
Spicy red fruit aromas. The mouth shows red and dark fruits, spice, lightness on the palate. No rusticity or hard tannins here. About 40% whole cluster here. (89-92)
2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges La Petite Charmotte
From a lieu-dit below Bousselots. Darker fruit than the regular Nuits, spicy, more weight in the mouth, dense with tannins and just a little creaminess. Harvested 12 September. 40% whole clusters. (89-92)
2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Ronde
This is an estate wine, made from the old Domaine B. Maume Gevrey-Chambertin holding. The wine is classic Gevrey-Chambertin with wild red fruits — strawberry and red currant — medium weight, energetic, and with good firmness. Harvested 10-14 September, 50% whole clusters here. (91-93)
2023 Morey-Saint-Denis Rue de Vergy
This is a superb village wine — dense and pure with darker fruit, intensity, and balance to go with excellent structure. 20% new oak and about 50% whole clusters. (92-94)
2023 Vosne-Romanée
Red and dark fruits, purity, and good underlying acidity make for a most attractive Vosne village. All destemmed. (91-93)
