The French word cabane means a shack or hut (our English word cabin comes from the French cabane). In the food context, cabanes are oyster shacks one finds along the western coast of France. Under humble conditions, one eats the freshest and most delicious oysters and other seafood at such locations, sometimes indoors and often outdoors overlooking the sea.
HSP La Cabane is the more modest sibling of HSP La Table, an excellent, itself unpretentious, seafood restaurant. Both are located in the Passy district (HSP stands for Huîtres & Saumons de Passy) of Paris’s ritzy 16th arrondissement.
After I discovered HSP La Cabane in late 2021, it quickly became a favorite spot of mine. To my dismay, it was closed for much of this year, but it re-opened this past October, and in November a friend and I made the trek across Paris to indulge in its delights.
The interior is small, but not cramped.
Every time I’ve eaten there, the diners seem to have been locals there for lunch and to catch up with each other.
The carte of simple dishes:
We took the smoked salmon, crème fraîche, and blini:
and then a dozen oysters:
plus a 50 cl carafe of simple but very good white wine.
My friend treated me, so I did not see the bill, but it must have been about 60€ for two for some of the freshest, most delectable seafood in all of Paris.
HSP La Cabane (as well as HSP La Table) is well worth the trip, which can be relatively long if you are coming from eastern Paris. In particular, it makes an excellent spot to go for lunch following a visit to the Musée Marmottan Monet.
