Géméllus last January was a revelation to me and I couldn’t wait to get back in early spring to see what was on the menu there.
The wine room, with plenty of treasures, looks out to the dining area:
The lunch menu:
A cold cucumber broth to awaken the palate. This was intense and refreshing:
Two more amuse-bouches, both light delicious followed the cucumber broth:
We went the wine-by-the-glass route on this occasion. An excellent white Burgundy for me:
And a very good young Bandol rosé for L:
The first course of thin asparagus, confit sardines, “boule d’or” tiny turnips, and smoked hollandaise sauce was an excellent first course combining seamlessly the various flavors in interesting layers:
The choice of red wine by-the-glass:
Unfamiliar with the wine in the center, a Cabernet Franc from Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil in the Loire Valley, I chose it:
It proved to be a good choice with spicy red fruits that went well with my veal below.
For her main dish, L took the zander with celery root and hazelnut butter in a sabayon sauce. It showed great finesse and subtlety:
But I preferred the veal that I chose. It had excellent flavor and tenderness, although I admit that the langoustine didn’t seem to add anything:
The restaurant’s Île flottante in a pistacchio crème anglaise was superb:
As was this chocolate treat:
And a little extra supplement with kiwi and crème fraîche:
Mignardises and a chaser:
The bottom line for a magnificent lunch for two, an outstanding value, and as always, service and tax already included:
Géméllus is one of the finest locations you can find in Paris these days for fine dining at an astonishingly modest price. For those wondering about the dinners here, we had a dinner last January the week after our lunch and it is basically an expanded version of the lunch (that is, the lunch plus a few extra courses). I strongly urge you to try this gem of a restaurant.
