Domaine TAWSE (Nuits-Saint-Georges) -- 2023 Part 2: Premier and Grand Cru Reds Tasted from Barrel and Tank
These are all estate wines from the Domaine Tawse in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the estate sister of Maison Marchand-Tawse.
Notes on regional and village reds are here.
2023 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Lavières
This wine is energetic with strawberry aromas and flavors. (89-92)
2023 Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roy
Beaune-Clos du Roy can often be a disappointing premier cru because much of it is on sandy soils, yielding a plodding wine. But Tawse’s portion is on clay soils, and the result is an attractive wine with strawberry fruit, precision, a smooth texture, roundness, and finesse. 30% new wood, all destemmed. (90-92)
2023 Beaune 1er Cru Tuvilains
Excellent concentration to the strawberry fruit here. This is one of only two Domaine Tawse wines at 14% alcohol, and it does not feel it. (91-93)
2023 Beaune 1er Cru Teurons
Dark fruits with some strawberry flavors, round, good concentration. (90-93)
2023 Volnay 1er Cru Frémiets
Red fruits, smooth texture, finesse, light on palate. A very pretty wine. (91-93)
The last four wines here are all from vineyards that formerly belonged to the B. Maume estate:
2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux
Pure, clear, precise red fruits, especially red currants; great energy and penetration. (93-95)
2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques
Energetic, nervy, pure — classic for Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Two-thirds of the vines here date to 1929, the rest are also very old. No whole clusters here. (93-96)
2023 Mazoyères-Chambertin
Pure dark and red fruits, concentrated, deep, excellent precision. When Maume made this wine, it was labelled as Charmes-Chambertin, an alternative labelling that is permitted. But the trend these days is for wine s from vineyards in Mazoyères to be labelled as Mazoyères, which is fitting, as there really is a difference between wine from the Mazyoères lieu-dit (darker fruit, more animal qualities, more power) and a true Charmes-Chambertin, that is one from the Charmes lieu-dit (redder fruit, more finesse, sometimes more wildness). 40% whole clusters here. (95-97)
2023 Mazis-Chambertin
Last, the Mazis-Chambertin seems less developed than the Mazoyères at this point, but is intense, dense, and very deep with dark fruit. It should develop into a great wine. (95-97)
