Domaine FAIVELEY (Nuits-Saint-Georges) Part IV -- 2022 Village and Premier Cru Reds Tasted from Bottle and Samples
Jérôme Flous, Technical Director Vines and Wines, said that the 2022 harvest began on 29 August. The only problem with hail was at Gevrey, around the Cazetiers vineyard. However, the hail took place around 20 June and so didn’t have much effect on either quality or quantity.
Jérôme Flous, Technical Directer Vine and Wine at Faiveley
Malolactic fermentations were early in 2022. For the north of the Côte de Nuits, most were done by by Christmas. He said that with the high pHs of the vintage, it is better to do malos early to avoid brettanomyces.
Yields were about 38-39 hl/ha for the reds. There was very little chaptalization, and alcohols in the wines are 13-13,5º. There is a little use of whole clusters — Musigny, Mercurey la Framboisière, Amoureuses, and Chambolle. It was used more in the in Côte Chalonnaise than Côte de Nuits because of lower pH.
All the wines below are Domaine Faiveley except for the Chambolle-Charmes, made from purchased grapes and labelled Joseph Faiveley.
An earlier tasting of Faiveley premier cru reds is reported here.
2022 Mercurey La Framboisière
Smoke, tar nose. Round, ample, deep, red fruits, sensuous. Tasted from bottle. The Côte Chalonnaise received less rain in June than in Côte d’Or, and so there was more hydric stress, making the Côte d’Or wines more tannic and less aromatic. 100% whole cluster in this wine. 12.8% alcohol. 90/A
2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Montroziers
This wine is an assemblage of all the Nuits village parcels, 2/3 of the wine coming from the northern part (Côté Vosne), 1/3 from the southern part of Nuits. Mineral red fruits. Good structure, minerality, freshness; finesse from. the Côté Vosne vines. (89-92)
2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l’Ecu
More finesse than usual for this wine; light in mouth, red fruits, some minerality. Smooth, flowing, charming. (90-93)
2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes
Dark fruits, finesse, freshness of vintage, focused, mineral. About 15% of vineyard had been a Pinot clone that gave color and tannin and has been replaced by Pinot fin. (91-94)
2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes
Faiveley buys the grapes but takes care of viticulture and harvest. Pure, light, red fruits, complex, saline, great finesse. An outstanding wine. (93-95)
2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges
Round, finesse, red fruits, complexity, length, light on palate. Full body but light with nice minerality and freshness. Almost creamy texture. (93-95)
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques
A little hail here. Very complex nose, intense. Medium-full bodied, darker fruit, finesse, length, smooth texture — very impressive wine. Firmness. Tension. (94-96)
2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers
Dark fruit, animal nose. Dark fruits in mouth, smooth, deep, but less complexity than Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Some minerality. Smooth texture. (92-95)
