2022 Rheinhessen Part IV -- Aulerde, Kirchspiel, Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück, Morstein from Groebe, Gutzler, Wittmann
Groebe and Wittmann are two of my favorite Riesling producers from anywhere. Alas, Klaus Peter Keller is no longer showing his wines at this tasting — it was always fascinating to compare the three greats.
K. F. GROEBE
2022 (Westhofen) Aulerde Riesling GG
Dusty, stony nose, medium-light, classic limestone structure, nobly austere. 93+/A
2022 (Westhofen) Kirchspiel Riesling GG
Pure, dusty, stony nose. Medium-light body, round, pure, dusty. Classic limestone Riesling. 94/A
GUTZLER
2022 (Westhofen) Morstein Riesling GG
Less focused and direct than the Wittmann Morstein, fruity, relatively simple. 89/B
2022 (Worms) Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück Riesling GG
An engaging clarity and acidity, but lacking the depth and concentration of a top wine. 87/C
WITTMANN
2022 (Westhofen) Brünnenhäuschen Riesling GG
Dusty nose, typical austere structure, but plum fruit in the mouth. Atypical, but enjoyable. 92/A
2022 (Westhofen) Aulerde Riesling GG
Round, a bit heavy for the structure, dusty. 90/B+
2022 (Westhofen) Kirchspiel Riesling GG
Slightly spicy nose but with limestone noble austerity. Light fruit, medium-weight, racehorse leanness, energetic. 94/A
2022 (Westhofen) Morstein Riesling GG
Pure, penetrating, nobly austere, clear. A classic from limestone vineyards. 94/A
