2022 and 2021 Saar Riesling Grosses Gewächs Part II -- von Hövel, Peter Lauer, von Othegraven, van Volxem
Here we begin to get the quality and consistency one expects from the Saar.
von HÖVEL
2022 (Kanzem) Hörecker Riesling GG
Mineral nose. Peach in mouth, medium-weight, good concentration for the vintage, some length. 91+/A
Peter LAUER
2022 (Ayl) Kupp Riesling GG
Yellow peach skin, medium-light, not hard in texture, long — can drink now. 92/A
2022 (Ayl) Lambertskirch Riesling GG
Very stony in nose. Just a touch soft on palate compared to the Schonfels from Lauer, stony, mouth. Cask sample. (90-92)
2022 (Ayl) Schonfels Riesling GG
Stony, pure, wiry, very dry on palate, penetrating. 93/A
von OTHEGRAVEN
2021 (Kanzem) Altenberg Riesling GG
Stony, pure, slate, mineral nose. Light on palate, but intense, deep, pure apricot and peach fruit, penetrating. Many Saar producers say the Saar’s greatest vineyard is Altenberg, not Scharzhofberg, and that von Othegraven has the best parcel in Altenberg. 94/A
Van VOLXEM
2022 (Ayl) Schonfels Riesling GG
Peach, round, medium-light, good intensity. 91(+)/A-
2022 (Kanzem) Altenberg Riesling GG
Floral peach nose. Ripe and round with concentration but also finesse and elegance, good penetration. Very long in mouth. This is reliably van Volxem’s greatest wine. 94/A
2022 (Wawern) Goldberg Riesling GG
Rose and peach nose. Round, good density and concentration, some peach. 91+/A-
