2021 and 2022 Franken (Franconia) Riesling GG Part II -- Apostelgarten, Centgrafenberg, Maustal, Pfülben, Rothlauf, Stein, Stein-Berg
from Bickel-Stumpf, Bürgerspital, Fürst, Höfler, Juliusspital, Am Stein/Knoll, Luckert, Staatliche Hofkeller Würzburg
Finishing up with Franken Rieslings — so many wonderful wines, so hard to obtain.
BICKEL-STUMPF
2021 (Thüngersheim) Rothlauf Riesling GG
Earthy mineral nose. Lemony mouth, good acidity, tight, light in weight, wiry. 93/A
BÜRGERSPITAL ZUM HEILIGEN GEIST
2022 (Randersacker) Pfülben Riesling GG
Black walnut nose. A bit soft, juicy, and some sweetness, with minor minerality. Disappointing from this excellent producer. 87/B-
2022 (Würzburg) Stein-Berg Riesling GG
Lime nose. Pure medium-weight, just a touch soft, good length in mouth. Drink over next 4-7 years. 92/A
Rudolf FÜRST
2022 Centgrafenberg Riesling GG
Medium-weight, mineral, no lack of concentration or acidity. Good for vintage. 91(+)/A-
HÖFLER
I have no experience that I can recall with this producer who is located so far north in Franken that one drives directly east, not south, from Frankfurt to get there.
2021 (Michelbach) Apostelgarten Riesling GG
Disappointing for vintage — washed out — low acidity and not much fruit. A bad bottle? 84?/F
JULIUSSPITAL WÜRZBERG
2021 (Würzburg) Stein-Berg Riesling GG
Some softness, but not unduly so, good minerality. A wine to drink over the next 4-6 years. 91/A-
Weingut AM STEIN — Ludwig KNOLL
2021 (Stetten) Stein Riesling GG
Mineral nose with limestone dustiness, makes for complexity. Light in weight, limestone dustiness, pure, balanced. 94/A
Zehnthof Theo LUCKERT
2022 (Sulzfeld) Maustal Riesling GG
Lemony, with just a little lack of concentration. Decent acidity, especially for the vintage. 91+/A-
STAATLICHER HOFKELLER WÜRZBURG
2022 (Randersacker) Pfülben Riesling GG
A touch soft on palate, but there is minimality here. Round, medium-weight. 90/B+
2022 (Würzburg) Stein-Berg Riesling GG
Restrained, dusty nose typical of limestone. Medium-light, mineral, round, moderate acidity. I’d drink over the next 4-6 years. 92/A
